Martial Vivot Adds Hair Tools to Men’s Grooming Line

WWD · Business news · 22 May 2017

The trade paper of record for fashion and beauty, on the tools — and the first published word that a second salon was coming.

What WWD reported

WWD reported in May 2017 that Martial Vivot — hairstylist, salon owner and founder of the self-named men’s grooming brand — was extending the line into hair tools. A comb, a beard brush and a moustache comb went on sale that month, priced from $30 to $48, through his own site and in Barneys New York stores.

The tools were handcrafted in France from horn and wood by a manufacturer that had been making them since 1875. Vivot told the paper that plastic makes hair static, and that he had not wanted to miss the chance to work with the company.

The same article carried the first published notice of a second salon: Vivot told WWD he was opening a second location of his West 54th Street men’s club, at the intersection of Hudson and Horatio Streets, between the Meatpacking District and the West Village. It opened in October 2017.

It’s just something that came up organically. Beards and facial hair are past trend now — acceptable and normal to wear no matter what job you have. Men are not scared of saying it’s normal for a man to take care of himself.

We’re building a new place — it’s very downtown without being downtown.
